People have different ways of attracting public attention to themselves for one reason or the other. In the case of celebrities, rumours [of which some may be true] and thoughts of people disseminated through media platforms are ways by which they earn much publicity in the music space.
As the saying goes, “there is nothing like bad publicity
” [often associated with Phineas T. Barnum, the 19th century American showman and circus owner] as one can thrive on it and ‘shine’. There are instances where there have been publicity stunts from some celebrities just to remain relevant in the industry. And since “bad news sells”, arts and entertainment websites and even those known for general news capitalise on that for traffic.
While the strategy by some musicians usually has been to deliberately make controversial remarks or delve into matters that would attract public sentiments prior to releasing their tracks, others also get falsely accused on equally controversial issues. Nonetheless these controversies usually turn out to be a catalyst to promote their songs
.
Black Entertainment Television (BET) award winner, Sarkodie is one musician who has come under criticisms over what some describe as ‘poor’ relationship with the media. Some have argued that the artiste has refused to avail himself to the media for interviews. However, during his media tour prior his Mary album launch, Sarkodie revealed on Pluzz FM that he is mostly quiet over controversies about him because it boosts his career. According to him, the controversy will end if he talks about it.
"…You look at the positive side. If they are actually talking about it, you need to calm down and chill. If they don’t talk about it then it means you have a problem. Whether good or bad I just sit down and enjoy it. At least you trend and that can be an opportunity to gain one fan and I wouldn’t miss that because when I come in and talk it might kill everything… but then people that love you are the ones that worry so those are the people that I worry about but not the case that comes up. I think most of the people are worried at home asking ‘oh why are they doing this to Sarkodie?’ I’m actually ok but I think about the people because it is hard for them especially with the family members and fans,” he noted.
