Educational authorities are unable to distribute some of the
free sandals for deprived basic school pupils because the sizes are meant for
adults.
According to the Director of Education of the Ada East
District, A D. Akuffo, the district was given 1,000 pairs of sandals for
distribution but only seven hundred could fit the sizes of children in the
area.
The remaining 300 are being kept in a warehouse because they
were big sizes and did not fit the sizes of the children.
“Those are big sizes and could not fit the sizes of any
of the
children in the district,” he told Joy News Manasseh.
children in the district,” he told Joy News Manasseh.
In June 2015, President John Dramani Mahama led the
distribution of about 10,000 sandals to basic school pupils in fulfillment
of a promise he made during the 2015 State of the Nation Address in
February.
According to Joy News’ Manasseh Awuni Azure, 9,000 pairs of
the sandals were returned to Accra after the launch.
Critics of the government raised concerns about the
insignificant number of the sandals.
Interestingly, out of the five hundred students of the Ada
Foah Methodist Basic School where the project was launched, only three got the
locally made sandals.
The sandals were given to Members of Parliament to distribute
in their constituencies, Joy News sources say.
